MAORI CONCERT

UNITED APPEAL FOR “MISS NEW ZEALAND” For the first time for many years the Maoris of Tuahiwi, Rapaki, and Christchurch banded together on Sunday evening for a patriotic concert. The proceeds were in aid of the candidature of “Miss New Zealand” (Miss Kathleen Davies), who was supported by the Maori Princesses, Misses Kia Riwai and MissMata Tikao Gillies. The St. James’ Theatre was crowded, and more than £IOO was raised. Mr E. T. Tirikatene, M.P., introduced the Red Cross candidate in the “Miss Victory” competition, and his daughter, Miss Whetu Tirikatene, presented her with a bouquet on behalf of the Maori entertainers. Also present was Lieutenant-Colonel F. Baker, of the Maori Battalion, who, in a brief speech, paid tribute to the exploits of Lieutenant Tikao Barrett, M.C., and other Maori soldiers from the South Island. Mr C. G. Scrimgeour was introduced by Mr Te Ari Pitama. A varied programme was presented of songs and dances, the most popular item being the canoe poi. The soloists were Lieutenant Barrett and Mr Wera Couch. Miss Riwai and Miss Gillies sang a duet. The accompanists were Miss Kura Tahiwi, Mrs Hariata Baker, and Mr S. Boyd.
