BAKEHOUSE PERMIT REFUSED
SOMME STREET APPLICATION
An application by G. Money and Sons, Ltd., for permission to build a bakehouse in Somme street, Christchurch, was refused by the City Council last evening on the recommendation of the town planning committee. The bakehouse was to replace one burned down in the same district. A petition protesting against the erection of the proposed bakehouse, signed by 16 ratepayers, was received. They contended that it would spoil what was in every way a residential area, that Somme street was very narrow at the intersection with St. Albans street, and that the addition to traffic of bakers’ vans would make the corner (where municipal buses turned) dangerous for pedestrians and school children. Four individual residents, who had joined in the petition wrote making further objections, one (Mr A. Kilday) forwarding a medical certificate in support of his statement that his health would be detrimentally affected by the noise. G. Money and Sons, Ltd., wrote to give additional details of the proposals. The letter said five residents had given the company authority to say that they had no objection. To meet the objection of Mr Kilday the company intended to put the drive on the opposite side of the building, to which there was no objection from the occupier of the property on that side.
