PRESENTATION OF HUT
WORK OF GIRL GUIDES PRAISED A hew Y.M.C.A- hut,, to be known as the Trefoil Hut, was opened at a South Island air station on Wednesday evening. Special interest attached to the ceremony as the money for the erection of the building was raised by the girl guides of the Dominion. The senior secretary of the station Y.M.C.A.. Mr S. R. Knapp, welcomed Mr R. Collins, South Island senior secretary, and Mr J. R. Fraser, secretary of the new hut, both of whom had been responsible for the final details in establishing the hut. Mr J. L. Hay, on behalf of the National Patriotic Fund Board and National Council of the Y.M.C.A.) handed over the building for the welfare of the men in the camp. He referred to the nature and scope of the work of the organisation, stressing the excellent service undertaken by the Y.M.C.A. for men overseas and in the Dominion. On behalf of the commanding officer, one of the station chaplains expressed gratitude to those responsible for the erection of the hut and paid a tribute to the fine work of the girl guides and brownies in raising money for this and other recreation huts in New Zealand. A brief dedication ceremony was conducted by the Presbyterian chaplain on the station. Miss Bromley Cocks, provincial Commissioner of the Girl Guides’ Association, declared the building open, and gave an outline of ways in which the girl guides and brownies had raised funds to build the hut. Peninsula Power Board’s Loan.—The secretary (Mr H. L. Lewthwaite) reported to the Banks Peninsula Power Board, at a recent meeting, that the board’s loan of £2500 had been taken up in one debenture by Canterbury University College at 3j per cent., over a term of 20 years.
