CRICKET

A GOOD DAY FOR • BOWLERS

LOW SCORES IN MOST MATCHES

Competition cricket was continued on Saturday in ideal weather, with hardly any wind. However, pitches, in most games, were tricky, and did not seem to wear well, especially at Sydenham Park.

Play was dull on Hagley No. 1, where Rlccarton-Old.Collegians met Army. Riccarton batted firsthand one of the opening batsinen. Hamilton, fell early with only five runs to his credit. The next batsman, Roberts, stabilised Rlccarton’a position to some extent by hitting out and compiling a useful 28 before being splendidly caught by Page off Henderson. Way was the next to go, well bowled by Tucker. The batting continued to be steady, with Newman and Gordon adding usefully to the total with sound and aggressive batting. Rlccarton declared with 207 up for eight. Three fine catches by Page had made the Riccartbn batsmen cautious throughout. The Army team began slowly, with Cromb and Kerr the opening batsmen. Kerr’s wicket fell early, but Cromb continued to score steadily. At 25 he went out ibw to Roberts. The only other Army batsman to shape confidently was Page, whose stolid batting added 56 to Army’s total of 148 for eight wickets. At Sydenham Park, St. Albans-West Christchurch easily beat Sydenham-East Christchurch, At times play was bright, but the St. Albans batsmen opened patiently and treated the difficult bowling with respect, J. Nee, with 42, gained the highest total for St. Albans. When he was Joined at the crease by Uttley play began to get interesting, but, at 27, Uttley was caught at square-leg by Kinvlg off McKnight. Sydenham opened badly, and finished worse. The pitch by this time had become very tricky, and the batsmen faced a strong attack by O’Brien and Nee. M. Stanley was the highest scorer for Sydenham. He contributed 56 to the total of 85. No other batsmen reached double figures, the second highest scorer being C. Smith with 7. Nee took three wickets lor 12 runs.

Hadlee, playing for Park-Old Boys, gave the Canterbury Regiment batsmen no chances to score anything substantial. He took six wickets for 13 runs. Jensen batted well for Regiment, but no one else showed confidence against the tricky bowling. For Park-Old Boys. W. Mapplebeck made 51 In good style. The remaining batsmen did not fare so well, but Park declared Its first Innings with 90 up for five wickets. District Headquarters opened quietly against Air Force on' Hagley No. 2. Cawtheray went out for a duck at the beginning, but G. Smith and W. McD. Anderson made up for this by sound and aggressive batting, scoring 49 and 71 respectively. Mackay's bowling was deadly and he captured four wickets in 3.1 overs for 11 runs. District was all out at 177 and Air Force came in to bat, opening badly when two. wickets fell for two runs. Kemp and Oliver were in good form, however, and their stand aided Air Force's total considerably. But the tail failed badly and Air Force closed at 133.
