PLANS FOR NEW WORLD

11. G. WELLS’ REVIEW IN BROADCAST

(8.0. W.) RUGBY, Jan. 15. “I realise that a new world is here now,” said Mr H. G. Wells to-night, when broadcasting in the new 8.8.C. series, “Reshaping Man’s Heritage, “The question is whether our species—we and our children, and our children’s children—can adapt themselves and conquer the new world or whether we are going to spin down this yortejc to extinction which has been the fate of all the mighty races and animals that have lorded it over the world in the past. This new world has a threefold aspect; “(1) There is the abolition of distance. Things have become simultaneous throughout the earth. Thirty years ago, to think of one super government throughout the world was an impossible dream. Now it is an imperative necessity “(2) There has come an enormous increase in the available power, at present used mainly for destruction. All mechanical power, wind-power, horse-power, and water-power, used in the England of Queen Elizabeth for a week would not equal that released in a moment by an 80001b bomb. “(3) The unskilled work of slaves and such-like toilers can be and is being largely superseded by powerdriven mechanism. “A new world is ahead; therefore there must be equality of mankind. These are not views I am stating, but manifest facts, for these three reasons. There is no choice before mankind but world-wide control of power and production and world-wide scrapping of our inheritance of hates and aggressions that began less than a thousand generations ago when wars began. “Obviously this world must be something over and above the patchwork of governments which we inherit. A group of commissions to rehabilitate the disordered world should be established as soon as possible, to which all governments must surrender their sovereign rights to practise economic and' political aggression against one another. That has been done already within the United States, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and Britain, where people of the most varied creeds, cultures, and languages live in free, open co-operation. It has to be done still more completely throughout the world.”
