ATHLETICS
MEETING AT RUGBY PARR
There was only a meagre attendance of spectators at Rugby Park on Saturday. when the Canterbury Centre , of the New Zealand Athletic Union continued its series of sports meetings. The track was not in favour of fast times, but several good performances, notably by junlot runners, were registered. C. H. Matthews, a New Zealand representative at the Olympic Games in Germany in 1936, made his first appearance in public for nearly three years. He started from scratch in the mile handicap, and while he is far from the top of his form, his run served as a nice workout at the commencement of serious training. The following abbreviations are used to denote the clubs represented by runners:—A.F. (Air Force), A. (Army), C.A.A.C. (Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club), P. (Presbyterian), N.B. (New Brighton), B.H.S. (Boys’ High School), St. B. (St. Bede’s), F.A. (Field Ambulance), Art. (Artillery), and W. (Westonian). Results were as follows:
