OBITUARY
♦ MR GEORGE ELLWOOD
Mr George Ellwood, the well-known ’cellist, died in South Africa last Thursday, as the result of an accident. This information was conveyed in a cable message received this week by his parents, Mr and Mrs D. Ellwood, of Totara street, Fendalton. Mr Ellwood received a musical education in Europe, where he went as a boy, in the company of his sister, Pauline (piano), and his brother. Harry (violin). Much of the time they were absent from Christchurch was spent m Berlin and Brussels. When they came back they toured the Dominion and became widely known as the Ellwood Trio. Following that. Mr Ellwood taught the ’cello in Christchurch and later in Wellington. Twice he returned to Europe, but eventually, after a tour in Australia, he went to South Africa, settling in Durban, where he had lived for several years before his death. He married Miss Gwendoline A Court, formerly of Christchurch.
