PROBLEMS OF MARRIAGE
Sir, —One cause of the increase in divorces seems to be overlooked by both church and Slate, namely, the higher education of women and the consequently more varied and better paid positions open to women. This economic freedom puts single women on the same footing as men. Then comes marriage and economic dependence on the man, who so often says (and acts) “The money is mine . I earn it and shall do as I like with it.” If a man before marriage does not put his position before his fiancee, she should ask him to do so. The woman is to blame as much as the man and should think twice before giving up her freedom and economic independence for a “pig in a poke.” How w'ould men like it if the position were reversed.—Yours, etc., INFELICE. December 9, 1942.
