ABSENCE FROM WORK
NUMBER OF FINES IMPOSED Fines have been imposed on a number of, workers in the Christchurch area for absence from work, This action has been taken under the Industrial Absenteeism Emergency Regulations, 1942, and the fines, in accordance with the regulations, are amounts not exceeding the equivalent of two days* pay. The assistant District Manpower Officer (Mr H. L. R. Read) said yesterday that in most cases the fines had been accepted by the workers with a good grace, as they realised that they had no valid excuse for absence from work. Where absenteeism was reported to the Manpower Officer a warning was issued to the worker concerned, and if the offence persisted, a second warning was sent out, after which, in the event of the offence of absenteeism continuing, a fine wps Imposed. Mr Read said that hundreds of complaints had come in from employers about absenteeism, although it was obvious in many cases that workers mentioned had fairly good reasons for absence. However, there were numerous cases where there was little excuse for absence, but in most cases it was found that a first warning brought offenders up to the mark.
