SHEARERS NEEDED IN OTAGO
♦-> — SERIOUS SHORTAGE REPORTED (P.S.S.) ' DUNEDIN. Nov. 24. “Some farmers are in a desperate position owing to the serious shortage of shearers throughout Otago,” the secretary of the Otago Primary Production Council (Mr E. H. Calder) said to-day. “One farmer, a returned soldier from the last war, who has about 3000 sheep, is commencing to shear on his own. Another man who has 8000 sheep to shear has just begun operations with one shearer on the board, and so far he has been unable to secure any other. “This man is paying a fully qualified wool classer at the rate of £lO a week, a cook £5 10s, and two shed hands £5 a week each. They were all engaged in the expectation that shearers wduld be available to do the work, which at the present rate will take more than two months to complete. "These cases are indicative of the difficulties with which farmers have to contend.” Mr Calder added that he would be glad if anyone who knows of shearers in South Island military camps would communicate with him.
