Seeley, Service and Co. Ltd." 263 pp. (21/- net.) Miss Ponder lived in Java for years. This is no traveller’s tale of what can be seen there, looking out over the heads of the people, but a close, neighbourly view of the Javanese, in town and village, and of their life. Only in a chapter or two at the end is the reader carried on a swift tour of the once happy island, by motor road and State railway. For the rest he sees a busy, cheerful folk in the field and the market, engrossed in performances of native music or drama, or celebrating their elaborate rites of marriage or funeral. Social organisation, based on the responsibilities of common land ownership, is well treated; so are native crafts, religion and “magic,” and the care of gardens and plantations. Many excellent photographs.
