HELP FOR MOTHERS

TWO CRECHES TO BE OPENED At the last provincial conference of 1 the Plunket Society, the Dominion president, Mrs James Begg, appealed to ■ the branches of the society in Canterbury to consider ways and means of helping the mother of a family, who had no one with whom she could leave her children when it was necessary for her to go to the city. The Christchurch committee forthwith invited the Plunket Aids to cooperate with them in providing creches in Riccarton and Fendalton, where the mother may leave her baby while she attended to necessary business in the city. The president and committee of the Riccarton Plunket Society called a meeting of the local Plunket Aids, and the following committees were set up:—Riccarton; president, Mrs A. G. Bean; honorary secretary, Mrs A. C. Grant; honorary treasurer, Mrs McLeod; committee, Mesdames Collins, J. E. Scott, E. Rivers, King, and E. G. Freeman. Mrs McLeod was appointed honorary Karitane nurse in charge of the creche. At a meeting held yesterday it was decided to open the creche in Riccarton at St. Ninian’s Schoolroom, Puriri street, from 1.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Thursday, commencing on Thursday, December 3. In Fendalton Mrs A. H. Weir was elected president, and Mrs C. H. Stonyer honorary secretary and treasurer. A committee was set up, comprising Mesdames H. W. Thompson, H. A. Penn. A. J. Borgfelt, R. Woods, W. S. Clifton-Mogg, S. Baird, C. Cocks, and I. Sewell. Mrs Stonyer agreed to act as honorary Karitane nurse in charge. At a meeting held yesterday it was decided to open the creche in Fendalton on the same day as the Nursery Play Centre takes charge of the runabouts, thus enabling a mother to leave children of different ages under care on the same afternoon. It was decided to open the creche in Fendalton on Tuesday, December 1, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Barnabas’ Schoolroom, Clyde road, and each Tuesday following. Mothers are asked to pay Is each time they leave a baby at the creche, to cover necessary expenditure. The Plunket aids, who will assist the honorary Karitane nurses in charge of the creches, were trained by the Plunket nurses in the care of babies in emergency, and those who have agreed to help in organising these creches re. gard this work as part of their war ■ effort.
