LIQUOR FOR CLUB MEMBERS
DECISION IN LICENSING CASE RESERVED (PA.) AUCKLAND, November 20. Pleas of not guilty were entered py counsel on behalf of William Opie, secretary of the New Zealand Rugby League Old Boys’ Association, who was charged before Mr W. H. Morling, S.M., with selling liquor without a licence. Sub-Inspector MacNamara said defendant was secretary of a clufrof about 700 members, and about 500 dozen bottles of beer were purchased every month. Each member made his order through the secretary. The club paid 16s 6d a dozen for the beer and ft was sold to members for 24s a dozen, the nrofit going to the clubs submitted that selling meant a legal sale by some person who haq property in liquor to some other person. There was a distinction between selling and supplying. Defendant was only the agent or servant of the club. Decision was reserved.
