PROMOTION OF U.S. OFFICERS

LEADER OF PACIFIC FORCES WASHINGTON, Nov. 20. Vice-Admiral William F. Halsey, who commanded the United States forces in the recent successful action against the Japanese off the Solomon Islands, has been promoted to the rank of admiral by President Roosevelt. Rear-Admiral H. K. Hewitt, who commands the naval forces engaged in the North African expedition, has been promoted to the rank of vice-admiral. Brigadier-General James H. Doolittle, who is in command of United States air forces in the North African expedition, has been promoted to the rank of major-general. Vice-Admiral Halsey’s promotion to the rank of full admiral came on the very day that his home town, Elizabeth, New Jersey, was celebrating Halsey Day in honour of his achievements. The schools were closed and Admiral Halsey’s birthplace was decorated like a patriotic shrine.
