BANKS PENINSULA HORSE SHOW

A NOTABLE DISPLAY Though most of the agricultural and pastoral associations .suspended their annual shows for this year, a few, in which the horse display is invariably one of the main attractions, decided not to deprive light horse and pony enthusiasts of. the opportunity of annual competition. In some cases a reduced ■ status - has been decided upon, confined to a gathering of a gymkhana nature, but the Banks Peninsula Association decided to hold a full dress light horse show. Judging by the outstanding display ,at Little River on Saturday, this decision' met with the approval of light horse owners, as competitors were present from more than 50 miles away, and visitors, came from distant parts of the province. The total entries numbered 520 as against 390 at the full show Hast year, and the gate yielded £lOl 16s, substantially ' approaching, the figure realised at the ordinary show, but, of course, there was no free members’ list on Saturday. There has never been a better display of light horses and ponies at Little River, entries in light horse classes ranging from 16 to more than 20 in- a 'few cases. Possibly because of Jhe later penetration of the motor into the Peninsula, a natural circumstance because of the hilly country and indifferent motor roads, that part of the province has not got so far away from the horse as other parts. At all events the Peninsula horse people can put on an excellent show themselves. With the aid of outside entries on Saturday,: the display was an outstanding one. A feature was the exhibition of military horses, the Peninsula being the centre of the province’s mounted squadron, and military men with many years’ experience, said that the display of military horses was equal to any that they had come across. The pones were also, a; fine exhibition,: with heavy entries and capable control by the youngsters.
