RETURNED SOLDIERS IN THE BALLOT
Sir,—The ballot in December calls up for service many soldiers of the last war. In 1914 they were volunteers: m 1942 they are to become conscripts. They are men in advancing middle age. Many succeeded, in spite of the disinterest in which their country held them, when they returned from the last war. in establishing themselves m trades, careers, professions, and businesses. Now they are to be called up again. After two-thirds of a lifetime of hard fighting and hard work they may expect to be set to cookhouse fatigues, cleaning latrines, sweeping barracks, and trotting about the parade ground to some young sergeants dictate. Many of them would rather die. I suggest this is not making, the best use of manpower but the misuse and abuse 0( »=npower. oSToLMER. November 20, 1942.
