VEGETABLE COMMITTEE

Sir,—As a member of the original vegetable committee, I was surprised to notice in the report of the reserves committee of the City Council that Cr. McLean was only appointed to one ot th'd three sub-committees to deal witn the vegetable campaign. As leader of the Women’s Land Army and a farmer’s daughter, Miss McLean is surely competent to serve on the vegetableplanting committee; and as the convener and chief publicist of the ong* inal vegetable committee, it is quite extraordinary that she was not appointed to the sub-committee of propaganda. The original vegetable committee was very fair and heard evidence from all sides, and the chairman, Cr. Sheppard, and Miss McLean put m hours of work on it. Those of us who were there consider it is very strange and even unjust that these arrangements were made by the reserves committee, while Cr. McLean was iabsent in Wellington. In fact, we would like to know what went on behind the veil in the reserves committee. —Yours, etc., MEMBER OF ORIGINAL VEGETABLE COMMITTEE. November 16, 1942. [When this letter was referred to Cr. J. N. Clarke, chairman of the reserves committee, he said he had jio •comment to make, other than to say that, at the last meeting of the City Council, Cr. Sheppard thanked the committee on behalf of Cr. McLean for the organisation it had set up and for its choice of members of the sub-com-mittees.]
