ZONING SCHEMES
SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS REPORTED
CHRISTCHURCH AND OTHER SOUTH ISLAND AREAS
An indication df the progress being made in the South Island with zoning schemes was given yesterday by the, South Island zoning officer (Mr T. H. Langford). Mr Langford spent last week in North Otago, Dunedin, Central Otago, and Southland, meeting postmasters or committees and representatives of trades, and dealt with butter, cream collecting, and meat deliveries, bread, ice cream, and coal in and round Dunedin. He had. he said, completed a bread scheme at Mosgiel and a milk scheme at Gore, and had dealt with country deliveries in the eastern and western districts of Central Otago. At Invercargill he had met the goods transport control committee and the petrol advisory committee, which was doing a great job, and had conferred with the Mayor about setting up a zoning committee and the completion of schemes already under way. He had also conferred with the postmaster at Palmerston about the various schemes in that district.
Though he had not yet actual figures available, said Mr Langford, a tremendous saving in petrol, manpower, and tyres would be assured from work already done. Zoning of deliveries of various commodities or reductions in vehicle operations had been effected in Collingwood and Takaka; Motueka; Nelson; Marlborough; Kaikoura; Kaiapoi; Christchurch; Ellesmere and •Springs counties; the Rakaia-Chertsey area; Ashburton County; Geraldine, Temuka, Winchester, and Orari; Fairlie; Timaru; Waimate; Mosgiel; Dunedin; Milton-Lawrence-Waitahuna; Gore; and the West Coast. Schemes were under way for Amberley, Rangiora and Oxford, and for Oamaru and townships south to Dunedin, and plans were being prepared for still further schemes in the other towns and areas mentioned.
Referring to work and plans for Christchurch, Mr Langford said that the milk scheme in the city was operating satisfactorily, with an enormous time and mileage saving. The bread zoning scheme, he expected, would be completed and approved in the immediate future. Returns had been obtained preparatory to considering a scheme for saving mileage in coal deliveries; growers, brokers, fruiterers, and greengrocers were considering ways of reducing mileages; a zoning scheme was already in operation for ice cream deliveries; a committee representing aerated water and cordial manufacturers was preparing a scheme; and information preparatory to mileage saving schemes was being sought from laundry and bagwash companies and from hardware, painters, and plumbers’ merchants.
