WOMAN CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR
INDUSTRIAL MANPOWER APPEAL
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 14. A woman selling soap in a department store pleaded conscientious scruples against wrapping it in a factory when she appealed before the Industrial Manpower Committee against the decision of the Lower Hutt Manpower Officer. The appellant objected to being directed to any industry, claiming the right to choose her own occupation. The appeal was dismissed.
The appellant, Mrs G. J. P. Shaw, had refused to report for work at a soap factory. She said that soap-making might seem quite harmless, but glycerine, which was a by-product, was used in high explosives. Her husband was in a defaulters’ detention camp, and she held similar views. She objected to being directed to any kind of work.
Prison Gate Mission.—At the annual meeting of the Prison Gate Mission on Thursday Mr S. W. Jameson was elected treasurer in place of Mr J. H. Stringer, whose death occurred recently.
