TURF GOSSIP

Patriotic Horsemen For very many years past a football match between North and South Island jockeys has been held at Riccarton during the Grand National week, the proceeds being given to help disabled jockeys. This year the fixture is to be held tomorrow, and although the strength of the teams has been depleted through various causes, a close match is likely. The proceeds on this occasion are to be devoted towards sending parcels to fellow horsemen serving overseas. Juvenile Parade One of the most interesting features of to-day's programme at Riccarton will be the two-year-old parade, arranged to take place immediately after the opening event has been decided. Eighteen juveniles have been entered, and they will parade in the ring at 11 a.m. They will enter the birdcage as soon as it is cleared after the first ‘race, and will then be ridden to the top of the straight. Later they will be sprinted in two divisions to the winning post. Trainers’ Association The annual meeting of the Canterbury Owners’ and Trainers' Association was held at Riccarton, and in the absence of the president (Mr H. Nurse) through Tlness, the chair was taken by Mr T. H. Gillett. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr N. Nurse; vicepresident, Mr A. Cutts; secretary-trea-surer, Mr A. Syme; committee, the Hon, G. R. Hunter, Messrs H. S. Williams, C. Emerson. T. H. Gillett, R. Sutherland, C. McCarthy, D. Spence, and A. S. Ellis. Sale of Thoroughbreds A thoroughbred sale was conducted yesterday by Pyne, Gould. Guinness, Ltd. There was not a large attendance of buyers, but nevertheless most of the lots were disposed of at satisfactory prices. Four juveniles by Paper Money, sold on behalf of the Mount Barker Stud, Wanaka, attracted keen competition, and the following sales were made: —Two-year-old, Paper Lilv, from Fairwood. Mr A. Louisson, Christchurch, 270 guineas; two-year-old colt from Clarenceuse. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., as agents. 155 guineas: two-year-old filly from Wanaka, Mr A. Cundall, Invercargill. 150 guineas, and three-year-old gelding from Royal Flower, Mr G. H. Humphries. Yaldhurst, 85 guineas. On account ol Mr I. E. Hide, Seadown, a four-year-old filly by Man's Pal from Warden's Queen was sold to Mr A. Louisson for 150 guineas. Other sales were:—Jocanta 22\ guineas, Citovenne 721 guineas, Royal Baby 12i guineas, and Lick’em 28 guineas. Eulogist failed to elicit a bid anywhere near the reserve and Gleucos was also passed in. From West Coast Baby Bun. who was ra £ with succeson the West Coast by Mr T. E. <-° ates ' be represented on the turf this sea ®°'’ by a two-year-old colt by Growler. The youngster has been named Wee Bun, and will be raced by his breeder. T. K. George. trotting notes Metropolitan Trotting Club Nominations for all ev £P ts ..?* Ne a Zealand Metropolitan Trotting meeting on August 29 will close on Tuesday next, 18th Inst., at 5 p.m. %^e b, C^tonian S Stakes, worth 20.489 dollars, was won by Ambassador driven by the leading American driver Ben White, The race was run at Goshen. New York. Pay Up won the first heat, after which Ambassador won two ln sll^ c . es ' sion. The favourite was Colby Harvester, who did not make a showing among the 11 starters. Good Acceptances ... The nominations received for the for burv Park meeting were not numerous, but ns the acceptances show very tew defections the fields will be big at the meeting to be held on August 22 to provide interesting contests. In at least three rapes all the horses nominated have been accepted for and the fields in the remaining events arc well up to the average A Good Team J B. Pringle has a particularly good pair engaged at Forbury Park in Busted Flush and Ronald Logan, and both .are in the Churchill Handicap of two miles, 4min 33sec class, and the Stalin Handicap, of a mile and a quarter. Both horses arc nicely placed, and while Busted Flush will concede Ronald Logan 12yards in the two miles race. Ronald Logan will offer the same concession in the shorter event. There seems no reason why a genuine little racehorse like Ronald Logan should not win a two miles race. The Churchill Handicap may be his mission at Forbury Park, where J. B. Pringle may win more than one race. Safety Pin , , ... Safety Pin has been accepted for in the Roosevelt Handicap at Forbury Park on August 22, and after her good win at the Patriotic Meeting at Addington she may bo in the firing line at the end of the race. She is a possible winner of the Roosevelt Handicap. "Pronto Lodge” The well-known property in Domain terrace, Spreydon. owned by the late J. J. MAY NOT RACE AGAIN

BEAU VITE’S FUTURE (Received August 14. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY. August 14. The trainer Frank McGrath has announced that Beau Vite probably will not race again. Veterinary opinion is that further training 'may result in Beau Vite being crippled for all time. It is likely he will be offered for sale as a sire. Beau Vite has risked a complete breakdown during his last two years’ training. He has always had an enlarged off fore fetlock joint and has done wonderfully well to stand as long as he did. Beau Vite won £26,680 in prize money.
