♦— WIN FOR CANTERBURY
(0.R.) ASHBURTON, August 14. In the inter-district, primary schools’ Rugby football teams' annual competition, completed at Ashburton to-day. Canterbury won the senior grade and Ashburton won the junior grade, Ashburton's win being the first in five years. The points were as follows:—Senior: Canterbury 2 wins, South Canterbury 1. Ashburton 0. The winning team was: P. Munt, A. Murphy, D. Matthews, J. Taylor, V. Stewart, W. Wildermoth, D. White, D. Turner, M. Hooper, N. Tobeck, H. Shepherd, D. Tabb, M. Caygill, B. Gallagher, D. Clarke, B. Anderson. T. Meachin, N. Searell, and J. Mcßae. Junior; Ashburton 2 wins, Canterbury 1, South Canterbury 0. The winning team was: Paul Roulston, C. Brand, R. Hyland, N. Lochhead, M. Kerr, Peter Roulston (captain), I. McDougall, K. Donaldson. R. Mountford, J. Werry, K. Tonks, J. Burton, R. Farrant, A. Donaldson, D. O'Grady.
This morning, an even match between the Canterbury and South Canterbury senior teams resulted in a win for Canterbury by 14 points to 12 points. Canterbury's points were scored by B. Gallagher (two tries), D. Matthews (try), and N. Tobeck (penalty goal and conversion). For South Canterbury, T. Hitchcock scored two tries and F. Cook kicked two penalty goals. A junior game between Canterbury and South Canterbury was won by the former by 3 points to 0. D. Neave scored the winning try just before the whistle for full time. South Canterbury had a territorial advantage for most of the game and was unlucky not to score. The concluding senior game resulted in a win for South Canterbury over Ashburton by 17 points to 11. For South Canterbury, T. Hitchcock, L. Fitzgerald, A. Clarkson. R. Speechley. and N. Dellow each scored one try, one of which was converted by F. Cook, while for Ashburton E. Flaherty obtained two tries and J. Scheib kicked a penalty goal The last Junior match was won by Ashburton. who beat Canterbury by 9 points to O, N. Lochhead scored two tries and C. Brand scored one.
