TANNERS’ DISPUTE
+■ ARBITRATION COURT HEARING Increased wages and provision for annual holidays were sought by employees in the tanners’ dispute, which came before the Court of Arbitration yesterday. The Court was occupied throughout the day with the hearing of evidence, after which the proceedings were adjourned for completion at Auckland on September 8 and 9. Mr Justice Tyndall was on the Bench, and with him were Mr W. Cecil Prime (employers’ representative) and Mr A. L. Monteith (workers’ representative). Mr H. G. Kilpatrick, secretary to the Canterbury Freezing Workers’ and Related Trades Union, conducted the proceedings for the union and Mr W. E. Anderson, secretary to the Auckland Employers’ Association, represented the employers. The Court refused an application to extend the dispute from the northern. Canterbury, Otago, and Southland districts to include Wellington and Taranaki. His Honour said that the Court had no power to extend the combined district beyond that existing when the dispute was created, but further application could be made to the Court when the award was issued. The dismite had twice come before the Conciliation Council, and the matters remaining for settlement were classification and wages, annual holidays, and the term of the award. In the union’s claims 33 classes of workers were grouped in six wage groups, against 18 classifications in five wage groups in the existing award. In adjourning the hearing, his Honour said the Court would be pleased to accept the invitation to visit one of the tanneries in Auckland.
