BIRD POISONING

Sir,—The resolution adopted by the South Canterbury Farmers’ Union to go in for a wholesale poisoning campaign next month of all our song birds is as short-sighted as it is wanton. When is the farming community going to learn that the birds do far more good than they are ever given credit for, and , that the country would soon be overrun with insect pests were not the very birds so ignorantly condemned busily at work keeping them in check? Let every man beware of smiting his friend in mistake for his enemy.—Yours, etc., MONA GORDON. August 13, 1942.
