A ONE-ROOM FAMILY

Sir,—Seeing your correspondent “Bare Knuckles” is so sympathetic towards the woman who was asked to leave the room she occupied, why does he not open his own home to her? This is his opportunity to show practical patriotism. The landlord was quite right to ask her to leave, for her own sake and the other tenants. He could have been kinder, certainly. Other businesses are not charitable institutions, why should a flat proposition be? Of necessity, I have let part of my home for years, have never refused babies, been kind and generous, charging only reasonable rent, yet without exception have found people with children the most inconsiderate. I have had a great struggle to bring up a family, but never went crying to others however desperate. I asked God to show me what to do to help myself and then got busy doing it. — Yours, etc., , PRACTICAL. . August 12, 1942. Sir,—l agree with “Bare Knuckles.” It is time someone looked into the houses our women and children live in while landlords live in a palace. I know a woman working for a wellknown dairy farmer helping her husband milk 60 cows and looking after five children. She is one of the best land girls in these parts. The house provided for them leaks; the old stove should be given for scrap; the copper chimney has fallen away; the tubs have not held water for years; the bedrooms have no light, as the wires are hanging bare; the iron point is not safe, and half the time there is no water, and the drainage is terrible—a nice home for a hard-working woman who has done her duty for her country.—Yours, etc., ONE WHO KNOWS. August 13. 1942,
