STOCK EXCHANGES LOCAL MARKETS QUIET Markets on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday were quiet, although prices remained very firm. The strong demand for all Issues of Government stocks and bonds remained in evidence. In the banking section Union Banks were firm with buyers £6 18s 6d, New South Wales ex dividend £2B, National of Australasia (fully paid) at £ll, all without sellers. There were buyers of most of the insurance shares at late rates, with a total absence of sellers. Goldsbrough, Morts were wanted at 25s 2d, sellers asking 25s lid. New Zealand Refrigerating shares (fully paid) Were firm on buyers’ offers of 21s 6d, sellers asking 225. Woollen shares generally were firm. Buyers of Christchurch Gas increased their bids to 22s 9d without attracting sellers, while New Zealand Breweries were firm on buyers’ offers of 31s 6d, no sellers. There were reported sales of A.C.I. at the Improved price of 46s 6d and more were wanted at 465, sellers asking 46s 9d. Buyers of Booth, Macdonald preference shares increased their bids to 5s lid, sellers asking 6s 9d. Broken Hill Proprietary Company, Ltd., had sales at 36s and 36s 3d, and more were wanted at 35s lOd, sellers asking 36s 6d. G. J. Coles had buyers at the improved price of 48s 6d, no sellers. There was a reported sale of Milburn. k}** 16 36s and more were wanted at 35s ea. Buyers of New Zealand Farmers Cooperative Association *'A M preference increased their bids to 345, sellers remaining at 40s. Otago Dally Times (cum dividend) had buyers at jOs. sellers 4356 d. Buyers of Weeks, Ltd., increased the r bids to £9 2s 6d without attracting sellers while Wilcox,- Mofflin were wanted at teed! Woolworths (N.Z.) Preference shares were in demand at 36s 3d. no sellers. Mount Lyells were firm on buyers' offers of 25s without response. There was a reported sale of Grey Rivers at the reduced price of 12s 6d. and more were offered at 13s. Apart from vestibule business, the following transactions were reported:— .
