HOME GUARD PARADES
* PRESBYTERY OBJECTS TO SUNDAY ATTENDANCES
Compulsory attendance at Home Guard parades on Sundays was the subject of comment by several members of the Christchurch Presbytery yesterday. The discussion followed the reading of a letter from Otago expressing concern at the serious effects of the Sunday parades on Christian work. The Rev. F. W. Winton said it was difficult to understand why the Home Guard should hold compulsory parades on Sundays, while other services held Sundays free for church parades. He moved a resolution supporting the sentiments of the Otago body. The Rev. L. M. Rogers said that Sunday parades in other services, such as the Air Training Corps, were also likely to become compulsory, and that such a step would smash Bible class work and undermine Christian work as a whole.
Mr A. J. McEldowney opposed the resolution, saying that there was no more evil in attending Sunday parades than in taking part in operations overseas on Sundays. It was decided to refer the matter to the public questions committee.
