BOOK OF THE DAY
ROAD TO HITLERISM A People’s History of Germany. By A. Ramos Oliveira. Gollanc*. 228 pp. (7/6 net.) In a lucid and vigorous translation by Eileen Brooke, Mr Oliveira’s interpretation of modern German history begins with the origins of German Socialism and passes to the revolution of 1848, the first of its long series of defeats and frustrated victories. There is Mr Oliveira’s theme, which he carries to its climax of interest in the rise and fall of the Weimar Republic. The German revolution, because of the reappearance of the old . oligarchies, needed to be modified. And as this change of front did not appear among the Socialdemocrats, who obstinately ignored the lessens of history, catastrophe was sooner or later Inevitable. Counter-revolution would triumph. This was the situation that Hitlerism both exploited and fulfilled. Mr Oliveira, in a survey of its progress, rationalises a prophecy of its doom. k k
