VICEREGAL (P.A.) WHANGAREI, March 16. The Governor-General (Sir Cyril NcwalD and Lady NewaU spent the week-end at Paihia and Waitangi on the shores of the Bay ,of Islands, They inspected the national reserve on Hobson Hill and Mount Bledisloe, and visited the Treaty House at Waitangi. The Vice-Regal parly attended divine service at the Paihia Church yesterday, when the preacher was Archbishop Averill. Sir Cyril NewaU visited Bay of Islands centres to-day. and Lady Ncwall assisted the Paihia branch of the Red Cross in war work. The Minister for Public Works ("the Hon. H. T. Armstrong), who was engaged on departmental business in Christchurch yesterday, left for Wellington last evening. Army promotions gazetted include the following:—Expeditionary Force: Major J. P. McQuilkin, N.Z.M.C., to he lieutenant-colonel (temporary); Captain J. K. Davidson, N.Z.M.C., to be major: Lieutenants G. I. Louisson. R. H. Dawson, S. B. Thompson, and H. J. Gossett. N.Z.M.C., to be captains; Second-Lieutenants K. I. Armour, R. T. Masefield, and J. L. Griffiths to be lieutenants; T. G. Broadway to be sec-ond-lieutenant, New Zealand Forces: Lieutenant J. T. Thomas. M.C.. to be captain; Second-Lieutenants F. 11. Syme, S. A. Tomkies, and J. A. Meares to be lieutenants (temporary); Sergeant-Major A. H. Gazzard to be second-lieutenant. Captain C. V. Stanich, Waterfront Controller at Auckland, has been transferred to Wellington to a new Government post, the nature of which has not yet been revealed. He has not resigned from the Waterfront Commission.—P.A.
