U.S. RAILWAY DISPUTE

REPORTED THREAT OF COMMANDEER COMPANY DEFIES WAR LABOUR BOARD NEW YORK, March 14. The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times” says Mr Roosevelt is reported to be ready to commandeer the strike-bound Toledo, Peoria, and Western Railroad unless the railroad’s president heeds Mr Roosevelt’s personal appeal to comply with a National War Labour Board order requiring arbitration of a wage dispute. Mr Roosevelt is insistent that a national agreement between industry and labour banning strikes and lock-outs for the duration of the war must be obeyed by both employers and employees. According to War Labour Board officials, Mr George McNear, the railroad’s president, has been defying the United States Government since February 27, when the board directed arbitration of the dispute. Therefore officials regard the case as very important, since if Mr McNear successfully defies the board it is believed its effectiveness in preserving labour peace will be ended.
