PAY ON DEFENCE WORKS
♦ £!) A WEEK FIXED FOR BRICKLAYERS (P.S.S.) WELLINGTON, March In. The Defence Works Labour Suspension Order has been issued under the Labour Legislation Emergency Regulations. 1940. It prescribes rates of wages on all defence works. Under the order the normal hours of work are 54 weekly. The rates are:—Carpenter, 3s 3d; labourer, 2s 9d: labourer 'concrete work), 2s 10d; bricklayer, 3s 4d; painter, 3s 2d; plumber, 3s 3d; electrician, 3s 2d; plasterer. 3s 4d; tiler, 3s 2d: timber worker machinist. 3s Id; timber worker (small saw). 2s 9d; and driver, £7 15s a week. , Any other class of worker employed is to be paid wages on an hourly basis calculated on the basis of one-fiftieth of the total amount payable under the relevant award or agreement for a 50hour week, with overtime at the rale of time and a half for the hours in excess of the ordinary hours. A worker employed on shift-work is to be paid 2s a shift, in addition to his ordinary wages.
