SOLDIERS WHO CANNOT SWIM

STATEMENT BY MINISTER

(P.A.) WELLINGTON. Margh 13. A statement issued by the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) reveals that men in the Army in New Zealand who were unable to swim at the end of February comprised 30 per cent, of the total strength at January 1. ■The numbers who passed the 30 yards’ test comprised 81 per cent, of the troops in the northern district, 64 per cent, in the central district, and 50 per cent, in the southern district, said Mr Jones. Last month many non-swimmers were taught, but the influx of recruits with many non-swimmers in their midst left the percentage figures for February at much the same level, except in the southern district, where the numbers unable to swim 30 yards had been reduced by 11 per cent. In one district 99 men held life-sav-ing certificates. In other districts the numbers were probably about the same.
