AIRMAN AWARDED D.F.M.
♦- PILOT OFFICER R. C. S. BECK, OF WESTPORT (P.A.) WELLINGTON. March 13. The Distinguished Flying Medal has been awarded to Pilot Officer Richard Colvin Seddon Beck, of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, according to official information received by Air Headquarters, Wellington. Pilot Officer Beck, who was born in Westport in December, 1911, is a son of Mr and Mrs R. Beck, Carter’s Junction, Westport. He was educated at the Westport Technical School. Pilot Officer Beck received his commission in February, 1942. The official citation reads;—" During his. operational tour this airman carried out some particularly fine flights. In January. 1942, he carried out a succession mine-laying mission off La Rochelle in adverse weather conditions. A few days previously he attacked a synthetic rubber factory at Huls. In September. 1941. he participated in a daylight raid on Abbeville. On several occasions he attacked the searchlight belt near Bocholt, thus facilitating the passage of our bombers to their objectives. This airman has set a very fine example.”
