WHEAT SAMPLES TESTED
RECORD NUMBER THIS SEASON A record number of wheat samples has been tested for moisture this season by the Wheat Research Institute and subsidiary testing stations, according to information supplied to “The Press” yesterday by the Director (Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf). The total number of samples tested was 4555, compared with about 1700 last year and with the previous maximum of 3000-odd a few years ago. In 1942 samples were tested.—Christchurch 2194, Ashburton 1680, Timaru 42, Blenheim about 160, and Temuka about 100. The high number of samples sent for testing this year, Dr. Hilgendorf said, was a reflection of the changeable weather.
Farmers’ samples had now practically ceased for the season, he said, indicating that harvesting was practically completed (except in the upper parts of the plains). All the subsidiary testing stations had closed down during the last week.
