HAIL DAMAGE ASSESSED

— » — ORCHARD LOSSES AT LOBURN The extent of the darpage caused by the hailstorm two weeks ago in orchards at Loburn has now been assessed as about 4500 cases of apples. This figure, supplied yesterday by Mr R. G. I. Hamilton, orchard instructor of the Department of Agriculture, represented the total loss at the seven orchards most affected, he said. Of these, four orchards suffered very heavily. Orchard losses in one or two instances were 75 per cent, of the total crop. Besides the total loss, which was slightly higher than his estimate of last week, an indefinite amount of less severe damage to these and neighbouring orchards—causing a lowering in the grade of the fruit—would have to be allowed for, so that the storm could possibly be said to have caused a loss of about £IOOO to the district.
