HOME GUARD RIFLE RANGE

1 — OPENING AT SOUTHHRIDGE Home Guardsmen of the Killinchy, Southbridgo, Irwell, Lakeside, Leeston, Dunsandel, and Doyleston units took pari in the opening practice on the new range at Southbridge on Sunday, 250 men taking part and a number returning fine targets. Major G. F. Hutton, D.5.0.. was in charge of the Held day. The range, which has a length of 300 yards, was constructed by guardsmen in their own lime on land lent by Mr J. T. Parkin, and was finished free of cost to the Army. The work was supervised by Captain S. McLaughlin, assisted by Mr James McAllister, Ellesmere County engineer, who is assistant adjutant of the Sclwyn Battalion. Telephonic communication has been provided between the butts and the mounds.

City Parades C (Elmwood) Company of the Christchurch North Battalion also had a practice on Sunday, am', work was done in scrub cutting and rivetting trenches.
