WHITE AUSTRALIA POLICY
SUSPENSION DURING WAR MELBOURNE. January 14. The Federal War Cabinet has virtually suspended the White Australia policy for the duration of the war. This action was taken to safeguard certain refugees from countries overrun by the Japanese. The Government has decided to admit, under certain conditions, a limited number of European alien women and children, and Eurasian and Chinese women and children from special areas. Those unable to pay their own way will be brought to Australia and maintained at the Government’s expense. Permission to come to Australia has also been granted to some Chinese men of non-military age who are able to support themselves and their families.
