"THE ONLY OFFICIAL ORGANISATION "

POSITION OF W.W.S.A. DEFINED The functions of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary and the extent of its authority in dealing with other organisations, particularly the Red Cross Society, were defined in a circular which the Timaru branch of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary has received from the Director of National Service (Mr J. S. Hunter). The Women’s War Service Auxiliary is placed at the head of all women’s organisations in this circular, which conveys the decisions reached by the Government. The document rules that the Red Cross Society and even the Nursing section of the Order of St. John — when doing work directly associated with the war—must work under the direction and approval of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. The circular states that the Women’s War Service Auxiliary was established with the main idea of ensuring that the plan of co-ordinating all the activities of women’s organisations in relation to the war should be put into operation, and that all organisations would be used to the best advantage so that overlapping or duplication in functions would be prevented. “The auxiliary is the organisation approved by the Government to do this, and is the only official organisation recognised by the Government for undertaking this work," it states. “It is, in fact, the channel of approach by women’s organisations to the Government and the source from which the Government’s decisions will be conveyed to those organisations.’’
