MOUNT PLEASANT Members- of -the Mount Pleasant with a : Scottish programme at a recent meeting. Items were given by Mesdames R. T. Smith and E. Collins (recitations), Mrs A. E. Ledsham (songs). The accompanist was Mrs R. Storie and the hostesses were Mesdames Worrall, W. Smith, and Misses A. and E. Smith. LE EON’S BAY For the monthly meeting of the Le Eon’s Bay Women’s Institute the president (Mrs L. Hammond) presided. Members brought jam to be sent to the Welcome Club. Miss Leonardo gave a talk on the conference held in Christchurch. Competitions resulted: Peggy square for cot cover, Mrs Byoret 1, Mrs Truman 2, Miss Leonardo 3; flowers, Mrs Truman 1, Miss Leonardo 2, Mrs BarHostesses were Mesdames G. Mackay and Lodge. AEOWHENUA Mrs B. Solomon presided at the November meeting of the Arowhenua Women’s Institute. Mrs J. O’Connor gave a lecture on the pronunciation of Maori words. It was agreed to hpld a social afternoon before Christmas. It was decided to hold the picnic in the Ashburton domain on January 18. Competitions resulted: —Nut toffee: Miss Hopkinson 1, Mrs Williams and Mrs Clinch (equal) 2, Mrs Beeby 3. Tea-towels; Mrs Palmer 1, Mesdames Barnes and Williams (equal) 2, Mrs Beeby 3. Large bloom: Mrs O’Connor 1, Mrs Barnes 2, Miss Greaves 3. Small bloom: Mrs Clinch 1, Mrs Beeby 2, Mesdames Williams and Palmer (equal) 3. RANGITIRA VALLEY The Rangitira Valley Women’s Institute held a garden afternoon at the residence of Mrs G. A. Davey last week, when the president (Mrs Talbot) welcomed visitors from the Temuka, Milford, and Seadown institutes. Games and competitions were held. This week the World Fellowship Group of the Young Women’s Christian Association held its final meeting of the session at the club rooms, Madras street, Mrs Peter Wood presiding.

Mrs L. G. Pocbck discussed Britain’s relationship with Russia for the last 200 years. At the conclusion of the meeting Mrs Wood thanked Mrs Pocock for her interesting series of talks to the group, and presented her with a gift of books from the members as a token of their appreciation of her services.

Sir John Dill, who next month will relinquish the post of Chief of the Imperial General Staff and will become Governor of Bombay, was recently married to Mrs Nancy Furlong, widow of Brigadier Dennis Furlong, who was awarded the D.S.O. in June last year and died on military duties three months later. Sir John Dill’s first wife died last December. His second wife, who is 14 years younger than he is, has been serving with the Military Transport Corps, and was in France during the evacuation. Recently she has been attached to the mobile section of the Folkestone police, and has earned a reputation for bravery during air raids. Mr Anthony Eden and Sir Charles Portal were among the 75 persons who attended the wedding ceremony.

Reports indicate that there has been heavy flooding in far South Westland, last week’s storm ' bringing about flood conditions such as have not been experienced for a long time. There was a good deal of damage to the roads. A washout occurred in the Okuru road and a slip occurred on the Turnbull road.
