OBJECT ACHIEVED
PIONEER MEMORIAL ' COMMITTEE
Satisfied that the object for which it was formed had beem achieved, the Canterbury Pioneer Women’s Memorial Committee yesterday morning decided to disband. The committee was set up at a public meeting held on March 22. 1939, with the object of raising a memorial .to the pioneer women of Christchurch. It was decided that the memorial should take the form of a shelter to be erected on the Summit road, at the intersection of the Bridle path, trod by the pioneers on their way to Christchurch after their arrival at Lyttelton in 1850. On Anniversary Day, December 16, 1940, the foundation stone of the building was laid, and it was opened practically free of debt. To meet the expense of building the memorial the committee "raised, by voluntary sub■scription, the sum of about £6OO. ...At the meeting, held at ieath’s yesterday morning, Mrs J., G, L. Vernon, who presided, said that the committee had done its work well. It was Miss Mildred Trent, she said, who conceived the idea of building the memorial, and as she was unable through illness to attend the meeting, it was decided to send her a posy of flowers with the committee’s thanks and congratulations on the completion of the scheme for which she was first responsible. Mrs .Vernon also paid tribute to the Women’s Auxiliary of the Christchurch Citizens’ Association, which, under the presidency of Mrs Edwin Hamiltop, sponsored a public meeting to discuss the project. That meeting set up the committee that carried out the scheme. It was announced that a small surplus, remaining after all expenses had been paid, had been handed over to the Christchurch City Council for the beautifying of the site of the memorial. Mrs Vernon thanked members for their loyal suport, and it was decided that the committee should disband. WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION WOOLSTON BRANCH
