DERBY DAY

FIELDS REVIEWED TO-DAY’S PROGRAMME AT RICCARTON The acceptances received for today’s programme at Riccarton are again good, and several fresh horses will add interest to the racing. The star item, the New Zealand Derby, is expected to be contested by a strong field well up to the standard of recent years, and although Battledress is certain to be in keen demand, a closely contested race can be expected. The Fendalton Handicap has closed with 15 acceptors, and the issue appears very open. The Criterion Handicap also has a well-balanced field headed by Boswell, Augment, and Duncannori, who were not produced on Saturday. Two-year-olds will be seen out in the Irwell Handicap. The race is for youngsters who have not won a race, and this accounts for the absence of many of the prominent juveniles racing at the meeting. There will not be a hurdle race today, its place being taken by the Middleton Handicap, run under highweight conditions. The Strowan Plate, for maidens, has attracted 31 acceptors, or one above the safety number for the six furlong barrier at Riccarton. Provision has thus had to be made for two divisions, but as only one has to drop out, there is every chance of this arrangement not being found necessary. Under the win and place system, the following horses are likely to be well supported:— Middleton Handicap: Good Health, Muffler, Fleche d’Or. Irwell Handicap: Trapeze, Silver Sox, Chestnut Glow. Strowan Plate: First division, Pennywhistle, Hinepo, Miss Saone; second division, Court Dress, Irish Treasure, Hunting Charm. New Zealand Derby: Battledress, Sir Gundi, Burra Sahib. Criterion Handicap: St, CloudTreasurer bracket, Leighnor, Boswell. Fendalton : Handicap: Rakanui, Haughty Winner, The Raker. Randolph Handicap: Atreus, Grey Night, Scarteen.
