HAPPY ENDING WINS NEW ZEALAND CUP

Success For Not Out In Stewards’ Handicap

CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB’S MEETING OPENS

The Canterbury Jockey Club’s metropolitan meeting: was opened at Riccarton on Saturday in unfavourable conditions. The morning broke Hne, but as the day progressed a strong and cold south-westerly wind brought with it occasional heavy showers. There was not a great deal of rain in the afternoon, but the wintry wind did not let up. The attendance was large, but was no doubt affected to some extent by the uninviting outlook, while the inclination of many racegoers to keep to the shelter of the stands between races made a substantial difference to the day’s totalisator turnover. The sum of £73,366 (win £32,043, place £41,323) was handled as against £82,711 10s on Cup day last year, a decrease of £9345 10s.

More than £SOOO of this decrease was accounted for by the drop in the pool on the Welcome Stakes, mainly through only two of the candidates being seriously supported. The track was in excellent order, and the rain that fell did not have any effect on it. In spite of the wind, times were comparatively fast, and some excellent racing was seen. Investors started the day well by selecting as favourites the first two winners, while the choice in the third race was narrowly beaten into second place, but favourites then had an unprofitable turn, and there were three win dividends well into double figures. The adoption of delayed preliminaries was again succcsssful, and was especially appreciated by owners and riders, as the horses for each race were not called upon to brave the elements for the usual long period at the post before the time of starting. The New Zealand Cup provided an interesting race, and the finish aroused the enthusiasm of the vast crowd. The result was a triumph for the Opaki trainer, B. Burgess, who led in the winner, B[appy Ending, and the second horse, Gladynev, the pair fighting out a hard tussle over the final stages. Gladynev was the much better supported of the pair, and ho was ridden by the stable apprentice, A. Midwood, while Happy Ending’s rider, N. Vaughan. was not engaged until the day before the meeting. Riccarton supplied the third place-getter, Wardress, who put up a creditable performance and threw out a determined challenge in the last furlong. Lambourn, who was a staunch favourite, was a close fourth, without ever threatening real danger. The second choice, Night Pal, was out of the contest half a mile from home. At the conclusion of the race a gold cup attached to the stake was handed to Mr J. D. McDougall, of Wairarapa, owner of Happy Ending, by Mrs A. S. Elworthy, after Mr Elworthy had congratulated the owner, trainer, and n'der on their success. A Riccarton Success Riccarton stables supplied the four placed horses in the Stewards’ Handicap, a most unusual event. The winner, Not Out, was having his third race for his new owner's, Messrs C. M. Turrell, of Wellington, and R. G. G. Westenra, of North Canterbury, and is now a cheap horse. Monetary was a creditable second, as he was again inclined to bore out under pressure. Leighnor put up a solid performance for his Greymouth owner in filling third place after being one of the last to the straight entrance. The favourite, Enrich, was prominent early in the run home, but did not carry on. The Welcome Stakes was considered an easy proposition for the Riverton filly, Winning Flight, but after being one of .the leaders for three furlongs, she gradually drifted and finished in sixth place. The winner, Grilse, was in front turning on to the course proper. and did not concede any ground in the run to the post. Indian Sign, carrying Beau Vite’s colours, made another bold showing, but had no chance with Grilse on the day. Chestnut Glow showed improvement by filling third place, narrowly defeating Silver Sox, who races in the same interests as Silver Streak. Battledress drew to his Derby prospects by a meritorious win in the Spring Plate, and another North Islander in The Champ, bred on the West Coast, created a big impression by his win in the Lintvoocl Hack Handicap. Features of the day’s racing were the succcesses of Haughty Winner and Parchment, owned by Mr T. Coltman. of Wellington, and trained at Riccarton by C. McCarthy, and the wins of Grilse and Not Out, both trained at Riccarton by F. Roberts. Details of the racing are as follows: SPRING HURDLES, Of £.100; second horse £OO. and third horse £.lO. NOTES ON THE RACING

The Hurdle Race The Spring Hurdles provided a spectacular race. Ferriby took charge after the first fence, and hod a good lead at the nine furlongs post, where he got in too close and narrowly missed falling. Master Lackham then went on from Roy Bun, but the latter crashed at the next hurdle. Master Lackham blundered at the next and Roddy drew Up to him, but the former went away again, and had a Useful lead entering the straight from Night Dress, Merry Simon, Roddy, and Ferriby all in dose order. Roddy made a, bad jump at the last fence, and Master Lackham carried on for an easy win from Night Dress, who similarly beat Merry Simon. Ferriby was some 12 lengths back, and Roddy headed the remainder, Master Lackham carried the familiar colours of Mr F. S, Easton, of Foxton, who faced Master Strowan and other good horses some years back. Master Lackham won the hurdle race on the concluding day at Trentham after being runner-up to Tidewaiter on the second day. Impressive Derby Trial In the Spring Plate there was an outstanding performance by the Derby candidate Battledress. He and Sir Gundi appeared to back out when the barrier went up and both lost a good deal of ground. Battledress quickly made up some leeway, but with half a mile to go he was still well back on the fence. With Sir Gundi further in the rear, cheddmgton and Daljarrpck disputed the lead from the early stages from Gay Genet, Eulogist, Aqueduct, Good Scout, and Legal, Cheddington weakened turning for home, and Daljarrock was first into the hpihe run from Gay Genet, Eulogist, Cheddington. and Aqueduct, with Battledress making an appearance on the rails. Eulogist drew to the front a furlong from home and appeared to have the race in his keepmg’ but Battledress, continuing his telling run, gradually wore him down and beat huu going away. Gay Genet held on for third monev bv a head from Aqueduct, with Sir Gundi. Kevin, Good Scout, and .Daljarrock following. The Champ Wins The Linwood Hack Handicap was won by The Champ after a hard struggle wim the favourite, Wild Fox, both being well back over life first half of the CroUpisiho was the early ®. The Joker, Dinah Dhu. and Ann Mie. Happy Ending’s cup All of the acceptors went to the post for the New Zealand Cup, and the pool totalled £13.740, against £14,922 last year Don't Forget quickly assumed the role ot pacemaker from Night Pal, The Rakei. Lambourn, and Rakanul, with Gladynev, Wardress, The Wrecker, and Iceland Spar in the rear. Rakanul shot to the passing the six furlong post, and led from Don’t Forget, The Raker, Night Pal, Little Robin. Lambourn, Happy Ending, and Night Pilot. Rakanul had a slight advantage from Don’t Forget entering the straight, with Little Robin, Wardress, Happy Ending, Lambourn, and Gladynev handv. The leaders failed to carry on commencing the final furlong, ahd Happy Ending showed out, with 1 Gladynev and Wardress challenging, and in a thrilling finish, Happy Ending hung on to beat Gladynev by a head, with Wardress half a length away. Then a length back, Lambourn just shaded The Raker and Rakanul. Night Pilot, Don’t Forget, Piastre, followed. and the last to finish were Little Robin and Night Pal. Welcome Stakes Indian Sign and Winning FHglvt divided IdvpuriUsm in tug Welcome Stakes, but

while the former gained second money, Winning Flight was done with more than four furlongs from home. Grilse, always prominent, led on to the course proper from Indian Sign, Winning Flight, Chestnut Glow, and Silver Sox. Grilse evaded all challenges and went on to win decisively from Indian Sign, with Chestnut Glow beating silver Sox for third place by half a head. FoxhaVeil, Who was prominent a furlong from home, was about four lengths back Iff front of Winning Flight. Apprentice Riders Court Dress and Good Health Were the last awav in the Apprentices' Handicap, but the former had run to the front with two furlongs covered and led round the home turn and into the straight from Penny Whistle, Halt and Parchment. The rub home had not long been in progress before Parchment drew to the from, and he had the race in hand a furlohg ftohi home, being eased up at the post to win by a big margin from Halt, who comfortably heat Penny Whistle. Good Health, Who was last early, finished on to be a length away just In front of Phyto, with Rue, Royoney, and Reharde next. Hot Out’s Success Boswell, Dark Flight, Burra Sahib, and Jolly Time were withdrawn from the Stewards' Handicap. The result saw the defeat of the favourite division, the nearest at the finish being Treasurer. Circular Note and Not Out led to the straight entrance from Pay Roll, Egyptian Rose, Leighnor, and craiglea. Not Out ran to the front as sbOn as the rhn home was commenced, ahd although- kept up to his Work by Monetary, was never in danger from that stage, winning easily .from Monetary, who came from a good way back to put in a brilliant filial effort. Lelghhor, also well back early, was a good third, beating Treasurer by a neck, with a similar margin to craiglea. Enrich, St. Cloud. Hearth, Egyptian Rose, Corn Prince,.and Palfrey followed. Haughty Winner Returns Bascule was Sent out favourite for the Riccarton Handicap, but after being stow to move off. he failed to get through when trying a run In the Straight, *aHd Was beaten out of a place. Airline soon rushed to the front and led into the straight from Stabilise, Haughty Winner, ahd King’s Toast.
