MANY VISITORS AT RICCARTON

WARM COATS AND HANDSOME FURS

The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Metropolitan meeting, a most important fixture in the pacing calendar oi the year, opened at' the Riccarton racecourse on Saturday when the great race lor the New Zealand Cup was the major event of a fine programme. As is always the case on Cup Day, there was a very big attendance, including many visitors to the city and some local residents who attend races on one .day of the year only—Cup Day. The course was in good order, the gardens were beautiful, the racing was exciting, but the weather was unpleasant, Rain fell in the morning and though it was fine in the afternoon, the sky was overcast and the wind bitterly cold. Consequently winter suits, warm coals, and furs, and snugly fitting hats were generally worn by the womenfolk. Mrs Arthur Elworthy, wife of the chairman, wore a dark green bouclctte suit, and small hat to match and her wrap was of black sealskin. With her was her daughter. Mrs Derrick Gould. Lady Wigram, who was accompanied by Mr and Mrs T. H. Lowry, of Hawke's Bay, wore a brown ensemble and brown hat. Mrs G. R. Macdonald, who wore a green frock, fur coat, and brown felt hat, was accompanied by her sister, Mrs G. Sapio, Mrs Gordon Fulton wore a black ensemble, the coat being trimmed with Persian lamb and a small black hat; Mrs M. Bethell, a navy suit and hat to match; Mrs J. H. Grigg, a grey suit and cherry coloured scarf to match the band on her grey felt hat; also in grey -was Mrs Herbert Elworthy. who wore a dainty white blouse with a grey suit and a high-crowned grey hat. Mrs Gilbert Grigg wore a wide felt hat to match her bright navy suit. Mrs John Montgomery wore a blue green and russet check suit and russet felt hat; Mrs H. S. Williams, brown frock, fur coat, and small brown hat; Mrs A. P. Boyle, iris blue frock, navy coat, navy straw hat trimmed with white flowers: Mrs George Aitken, a brown wool sheer ’’rock, brown fur coat, and woodland green hat; Mrs Tyndall Harman, a navy suit, rose pink jumper and navy hat; tire Hon. Mrs Patrick May, a black and white check frock, black coat, and head band to match her dress. Black and Navy Black was a favourite choice with many women. Touches of white relieved Mrs J. F. Buchanan’s black ensemble, and her black hat had a rolled-up brim. Mrs Endell Wanklyn wore a black beret with a black frock and coat, Mrs H. D. Greenwood had brilliant clips at the neck of her black frock, with which she wore a fur coat and black sailor hat and Mrs Kenneth Robinson wore a small black hat with a black ensemble. Bead embroidery trimmed the black frock of Mrs C. C. Davis's ensemble, and her black sailor hat was brightened with touches of rose pink. Others wearing all black were Mrs Frank Scott and Mrs Walter Radford, in whose party was Mrs H. H. G. Johnson, of Wellington, Mrs Geoffrey Hamilton, who was accompanied by her daughter. Miss Joy Hamilton, wore a navy frock and long coat, with collar and tiny pockets ol white and a navy beret with while bow at the side. Others in navy were Mrs J. W. Woodhou.se, Mrs Sholto Douglas, Mrs Maurice Johnston. and Mrs Geoffrey Wood. Mrs Maurice Louisson wore a navy suit with white revets and a navy hat with touches of white. In her party was Miss Kathleen Greenslade, of Dunedin. The Visitors A party from Government House, Wellington. included Wing Commander Humphrey Bevan and Mrs Bevan, Miss Nora Walton, and Captain H. G. Helmore. Mrs Bevan wore a brown and beige plaid suit, brown blouse, fur cape, and small furtrimmed hat, and Miss Walton wore a grey tweed suit and long coat to match, and a small white swathed hat. Other North Island visitors were Mr and Mrs W. McA. Duncan (Taihape), Mrs Norman Brett (Auckland), Mrs Hubert Nathan (Wellington), Mrs M. Barnett, who was in Miss J. Donnelly’s parly, and Mrs Walter Norwood (Wellington), who was will) her mother, Mrs J. Redpalh. and Mrs A. L. Crupp. The Clamant district was strongIv represented. Dr. R. S. J. Fitzgerald and Dr. Elspeth Fitzgerald were accompanied by their daughter, Miss Pamela Fitzgerald, and her friends. Misses Paulette Woodhouse and Barbara Austin. Mrs Arthur Nichols (Maheno) wore a tan fmek, dark green coat, golden fox fur, and dark green hat. She was with her husband and Miss Josephine Nichols. Others from Oamaru were Mr and Mrs J. Farrell and Mr and Mrs E. Steele, Mrs Richard Hudson and Dr. and Mrs Greenslade were amongst Dunedin representatives, and from Timaru had come Dr. and Mrs G. Kingston and Mr W. H. Walton and Miss Dorothy Walton, the latter wearing a light cyclamen coloured suit, jumper of a deeper shade, and small hat to match her suit. Another southern visitor was Miss Helen Mills (Waimate), who was with her uncle, Mr H. S. S. Kyle. Mrs Harden Young (Wellington) was wilh her cousin, Mr 11. A. Young. Receiving a warm welcome back to Chrl Ichurcb were Group Caplgin and Mrs IM. W. Buckley, who returned lan week from Englantj. Mr and Mrs D. Drummond Bailey, ngw of New Plymouth, but formerly of Christchurch, were with Mrs f. Terrier and her sifters. Mr? T• CL gristed asd Mrs Ivan Seay. Mr? Terrier .wpre a grey suit and felt hat tg match. Checks and Plaids A cheery note was struck by many cheeks and nlaids in vivid colours. Mrs J. Mowbray Trinn wore a suit of pervenche blue and near! grey check and blue felt bat; Mrs G. Weston's plaid coat of blue

was overehecked with red and worn with a navy hat; Mrs Algar Williams wore a yellow and brown check coat with a brown frock and a small brown hat. Mrs Maurice Macfarlane wore a brown and blue check suit, blue jumper, and brown felt hat with blue band. Mrs Jack Matson’s small rose-pink hat was worn with a gaily checked coat.
