CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS

REASONS FOR HEARING APPEALS IN PRIVATE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. The Dominion Executive Committee of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, which recently urged that the cases of conscientious objectors which go before the special one-man tribunals should be heard in public, has received a reply from the Associate Minister for National Service fthc Hon. D. Wilson). The Minister points out that as members of the tribunals will be concerned with delails of an objector’s employment, his financial position, and probably in some cases with details relating to his employer, it was decided, after very careful consideration, that the hearings should be taken in private. “You will recall, however,” adds Mr Wilson, “that the Acting-Prime Minister told the House that the decisions would be available for publication. Tbis. I think, adequately meets the position.”
