HOUSING FOR THE AGED
PROGRESS OF COUNCIL’S SCHEME Good progress with the Christchurch City Council’s pensioners’ cottages scheme was reported to the council last evening by the housing committee. Thirty-two units are being built on a site in Carey street. The foundations are now in place and the framework of five blocks has been erected. Nineinch brick dividing walls to two of the blocks have also been completed. The council approved a proposed layout for future cottages at Jerrold street. The plan shows seven blocks of four units each, with a new roadway running through the middle of the site and finishing in a balloon loop. A piece of land has been set aside for a reserve equal in area to the old reserve. A petition from the tenants of cottages of Barnett avenue drew attention to the difficult exit and entrance to and from thi avenue in bad weather. It was decided to fo-rn a path on the south side of Sydenham Park under the trees from the water tower to Colombo street.
