SPRING SHOW
NEW BRIGHTON SOCIETY The spring flower and vegetable show of the New Brighton Horticultural Society held on Saturday, was successful in the number of entries and the high standard of the exhibits. Mr R. A. Garnett was judge. A display by the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Aquarium and Water-Garden Society attracted attention. Many people are under a wrong impression that flowers could not be grown in the sand, said the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), in opening the show. It they were to visit the show and the magnificent blooms, equal to any in Christchurch, they would realise what could be done. The Mayoress (Miss E. Couzins) presented the cups and special prizes. The winners of cups and special prizes were:—Dr. Stevens memorial challenge cup (most points exclusive of decorative and children’s section), Mrs F. Rides; J. N. Clarke challenge cup (points in daffodil and cut (lowers section), Mrs F. Rides, Mr B, H. Dean’s prize (most points in children's section), Ron Lorgelly; Mr W. Carpenter’s prize (best polyanthus exhibit), Mrs Lorgelly; Mr C. Chapman's prize (most points in decorative section), Mrs A. H. Ragg.
