TURF GOSSIP

First Experience Ferriby suffered his first fall at Oran on Saturday. He was moving up to the lead in the first furlong, but misjudged the first fence and tell heavily. His rider, A. Stokes, sustained a shaking and a dislocated cellar bone, and was taken to the Geraldine Hospital for observation. Unfortunate Mistake Knight Commander was going like a winner when he went out at the last fence of Saturday’s hurdle race. It transpired that Flame Queen was hesitant going to the fence, and came back on to Knight Commander, and the latter’s jockey, scenting danger, endeavoured to pull him away from Flame Queen’s heels, and the horse jumped over the inside corner of the hurdle and crashed through the course railing. This was Knight Commanders best effort for a long time, and it was unfortunate for his owner-trainer, E. Parker, that such a mishap should occur when a belated return looked imminent. A Severe Ordeal Recollection was definitely unlucky on Saturday. He was well back over the first half of the journey, but then commenced gradually to reduce the big gap to the leaders. He jumped the hurdle at the five-furlong post well, but on landing was almost stopped to a standstill by Panara falling in front of him. He then took some time to settle down again, but was then many lengths away, and by filling third place, only four lengths behind the winner, suggested that he would have taken a very prominent part in the finish with an uninterrupted passage. Promising Novice Roddy, who paid nearly double figures for a place in the hurdle race on Saturday, is a five-year-old gelding by Roydon from Princess Alleyne, and is trained by F. Christmas at Riccarton. Roddy is a comparative novice hurdler, but is the right stamp for the game. The Right Breed Bali, winner of the Wainui Handicap at Orari on Saturday, was bred by his owner, Mr H. S. Macey, of Timaru, the dam Colourline being by Nigger Minstrel from Civilisation, dam of the speedy Civility and Siaosi, Good Prospects Lord Dundas created another good impression by his second placing on Saturday. He is a well-grown three-year-old by Myosotis from Lady Ripon, a sister to Studley Royal. Lord Dundas was bred by Mr E. Gates, and is being raced by Messrs H. E. Cook and C. Holdsworth. Out of His Element Iceland Spar was as usual slow early in the President’s Handicap at Orari on Saturday, and although he was better placed at the finish than at previous stage of the race, he was never in a likely position. The .turning track and distance did not favour him, but the race will do him good in view of his proposed trip to Wingatui next week. Lacked Pace Boloyna began smartly in the Stewards’ Stakes on Saturday and accompanied Strip and Sham Boy for about a furlong, but he was then eased back, and in another furlong, he was several lengths in the rear of the small field. He did not improve his position to any extent during the remainder of the journey.

Delayed Return Ackemma, wno brought about the defeat of Parchment on Saturday, has been a disappointing mare to date for her owner, Mr E. C. Govan, of Te Anau. She is a half-sister to Doubleack, winner for Mr Govan of the last Dunedin Cup, and to Waitoru. Find your market with an advertisement in “The Press,” in the Small Advertisement Columns.
