ROWING
CANTERBURY CLUB’S ANNUAL REPORT A membership of 207, an increase of eight, is recorded in the eighty-first annual report of the Canterbury Rowing Club, which will be presented to the annual meeting. Of this number 42 arc classed as active members and 41 are on active service. An urgent appeal is made for new members. During the year, the report says, the heavy tours were put in good condition. Tlie plant on the whole, both racing and practice, is in good order. There is a shortage of sculls and oars, but those in hand, it is considered, should be sufficient to meet the present limited demand. Tribute is paid to the memory of Mr C. F. Turner, a vice-president, whose death has occurred. The report also says; "We also deeply regret the death of two of our members on active service. John E. M. Steeds, who left with the Royal New Zealand Air Force approximately 12 months ago, has been reported missing on air operations, and is now presumed dead. He was an active and energetic member of our club, who did a considerable amount of work for many years. Griff Bristed. who was connected with our club for many years, died in Egypt as the result of an accident. Our sympathy is extended to relatives and friends, and we trust that the thought that they were happy to serve their country may be some small consolation.”
