AIRPORT FOR OAMARU

GIFT OF £IOOO PROMISED (F.0.0.R.) OAMARU, September 26. A prominent citizen of Oamaru, who wishes to remain anonymous, has promised £IOOO towards the establishment of an airport at Oamaru, provided that no gift duty is payable. Announcing this offer at a meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council, the Mayor, Mr J. C. Kirkness, said that the establishment of an airport was important to Oapiaru. and that if a definite move were not made Oamaru would be left in a backwash in the matter of air travel. The Mayor referred to inquiries already made and emphasised the necessity for an airport on the site of the present emergency landing ground. The council decided to thank the citizen for his generous offer, and a committee will be set up as the controlling authority, including representatives of the Oamaru Borough and County Councils.
