AFFILIATION OF UNITED CLUB ANNUAL MEETING APPROVES CANCELLATION After long discussion the annual meeting of the United Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club approved of ; the action of its executive in Cancelling the club’s affiliation with the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association There, was vigorous argument, several speakers from the tennis section protesting strongly,, but the resolution of approval was" carried by 38 votes to 16. the club reaffiliate with the Lawn Tennis Association. Dr. J. Guthrie presided in the absence through illness of the president (Mr A. 'M. West). The annual report set the membership at 368, * of which 189' were tennis members, 98 bowls, and 81 croquet. Both the bowls and croquet sections showed substantial increases in membership, but the tennis membership showed further decline. The balance-sheet showed an excess of receipts over expenditure of £l4l 7s Bd, enabling the-club to establish a reserve fund of £IOO towards the future purchase of a new motor mower. After negotiation, with the Christchurch Domains Board the .rent had been reduced from £lO2 to £BO for one year only. A reduction for the, coming year to the same figure had been applied for. Dr. Guthrie said that the club owed its financial position largely to the generous subsidy received from the Government "for labour expenses. The* total cost of labour was approximately £630, and abqut half had been found by the Government. He paid special tribute to the service given to the club by. the honorary secretary, Mr- B. Ai Barrer. Several other speakers spoke in praise of Mr Barrer’s work, for the club. Burn (tennis section): president of bowls section. Mr Pryce Jones; president of croquet section, Mr A. G. F. Ross; executive, Messrs. B. A. Barrer and C. Angas: (tennis), H. A. Penn and G. E. Richardson (croquet), St. G. Atkinson and F. Hunnibell (bowls); honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr B. A. Barrer; honorary auditor, Mr J. C. Cullman.
