Miss B. McLauchlan has been appointed clerk of the Wyndham Town Board in succession to Captain M. C. Rice, who was killed in action in Crete. She. will take over her new • duties on Octo’ber 1. The death occurred in Marton this _ week of Mrs Katherine Anne Newanj man, wife of Mr Edward Newman, C.M.G., who was the originator of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Acknowledgement of Debt to British Seamen Fund and a member of Parliament for 14 years till his retirement in 1922. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1923 to 1930. Miss Maud Frostick is visiting her sister, Mrs G. Webster, Timaru. Mrs Robin Harper (Peterborough street) will leave on Monday for Heretaunga, where she will stay for some weeks while her husband is in camp in Trentham. Mr and Mrs L. Sisson (Papanui) have left for Hanmer Springs, where they will spend a holiday for several months. Miss Mary McLean has been appointed the City Council’s representative on the Christchurch District Committee of the Federation of Health Camps. Miss H. K. Lovell-Smith, who has been visiting her sisters at “Aorangi,” Papanui road, will return to Dunedin on Monday. Miss M. Mr R. E. Marsh gave a talk on modern shoe construction to members of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association at a recent meeting, when Mrs R. A. Ambridge presided over a good attendance. Mrs J. E. Mason sang solos and Mrs F. E. Reeve was accompanist. Results of a novelty competition were as follows:—Mrs D. Downie 1, Mrs A. M. Talbot 2, Mrs W. Bascand 3. No fewer than 220 garments were displayed before being packed for the Lady Galway Guild, by members of the Wairarapa Road Sewing Circle at the home of Mrs W. A. Burgess. Knitted quilts and children’s clothing were featured. Most of the material used was new, and had been made up by members of the circle, who had previously sent in 250 garments. News has been received that Elaine. Hamill, .the New Zealand girl who won success on the stage, was married recently to Mr Murray Campbell Scarlett, of Dundee. Scotland. Born in Hamilton, Miss Hamill was a member of the Repertory Society. Her parents were residents of Taihape for a few years. The Scarlett family own two big jute mills, of which Mr Scarlett is general manager. He is a prominent golfer, and is described as being tall and of fine physique.
